Rain

21Jul10

This is the view out of my train window at 6.00 am waiting to leave Perth Station.  All a bit depressing in summer. I then though that this was such a driech subject that it would look well in balck and white: On this occasion the colour version somehow looks bleaker to me. This was […]

Hostas

20Jul10

Our hostas, one of my wife’s favourite plants are just starting to bloom.  They are great for photography as well, with their architectural leaves a boon for black and white photography.  Colour is better for their flowers, here with the evidence of a recent rain storm. These required quite a bit of recovery to bring […]

Fern Fronds

19Jul10

I have been practising with a manually focused macro lens.  These fern fronds were one of the studies I tried.  Essentially a green monochromatic image originally, it seemed to lend itself to a black and white conversion. Cropped slightly and converted to B&W in Aperture.

Contours

18Jul10

There are bits of rock sculpted like waves or the contours of hills along the shoreline of Eriskay.  Some look as though you are looking down from a plane at a landscape below.  This one was a rather simpler display of form and texture, but could almost be a long distance shot of some hills. […]

It is very frustrating to travel into Glasgow daily past splendid countryside and often with marvellous light and not be in a position to take pictures easily.  Too often they are spoiled by blur from the train’s vibrations or the internal reflections from the windows.  This was a rare example where things worked out – […]

Into the Mist

16Jul10

The weather has been poor here over the last few days with mist and rain.  Making the most out of it I thought I would experiment with taking pictures in these unpromising conditions.  Here is one on the Glentarkie road just outside our village: This actually came out of the camera rather dark.  I should […]

I saw this sunburst when I was at Balvaird.  I only had a fixed (and relatively short) lens with me; so, I tried to place the impact of the sudden shafts of sunlight in the generally darker countryside.  Shooting into the sun added its own challenge.   This is another shot that has much more […]

Curves

14Jul10

It is unusual for me to pre-visualise a shot.  I a much more instinctive photographer than that.  However, driving to work I did foresee the potential of the curves and warning signs in Glenfarg; so, stopped on the way home to take some pictures.  This is the one which best expressed the snaking nature of […]

Go No Further

13Jul10

At the end of the platform at Queen Street Station in Glasgow are the usual bunch of red lights and warning signs forbidding passengers from going further as the rail lines disappear into the maw of a tunnel. Developed in Aperture, this needed to be straightened very slightly before Recovery (full) and Definition were applied. […]

Vanishing Point

12Jul10

This is a shot while I was waiting for the train this morning –  taken from the end of platforms 5 and 6 at Perth station the rails snake away into the distance.  And no, the bridge isn’t square, but it isn’t in real life either. I wanted to give this a fairly classic black […]
