Closed Door
I have been at this blog for about eight months now and bar a day here of there missed while I have been travelling I have pretty much managed a picture a day. Rather reluctantly, but definitely, I have decided that I need to draw this to an end for now. It has been very […]

Colours
Pals is a very attractive Catalan hill town that has preserved most of its architecture at the expense of giving itself over to the tourist trade – a sad but understandable bargain. There are lots os shops and boutiques vying for the visitors’ attention selling artisanal food (excellent, but pricey) and crafts through to more […]

Catch of the Day
After a long day (started at 2.30 a.m. when some clown set off the fire alarm in our hotel) we have travelled by plane, train and automobile (in that order) from London to the Catalan coast for a walking holiday. After a such a day there was little energy left to do more than find […]

After the Harvest
Following on from yesterday’s post, fields are being gradually cleared of their grain crops. The oil seed rape is also being cleared away. But the architectural items of the harvested fields are the bales of straw dotted around. The weather has been rather mixed round here, as you can see, so the whole harvest is […]

Lion Couchant
We haven’t been in St Andrews Square Gardens in Edinburgh for some time. The gardens in the centre of the square are open to the public (not the case for most of my life). This striking statue of a lion is a new addition. I love the way that the animal emerges from the stone. […]

Woodstore
This pile of split logs was one of many at the Pillars of Hercules organic restaurant near Falkland. I liked the pattern and texture. While this would have worked in black and white, I felt that it was better in a slightly desaturated, contrasty development with plenty of Definition. And that was how I developed […]

Blown Leaf
This Horse Chestnut leaf was one of main blown from trees in Glen Tilt in recent high winds. It provided ontrasting shapes, colours and textures from the ground. This was simply converted. Contrast boosted by using levels, Definition to maximum to bring out the differences in texture. A slight s-curve added further depth and it […]

Anyone for tennis?
This abandoned tennis court was seen on an early morning run – decaying and rather sad: This was very simply processed. I cropped the image to get rid of some dead space, applied a cross process preset in Aperture to enhance the decaying feel of the place and maximised the Definition to bring out the […]

Old Door
I passed this old wooden door in Perth this morning. The peeling paint and distressed look was what appealed to me. A little highlight recovery was needed. However, the principal editing was to emphasise the distressed nature of the paint. Definition to maximum and additional Definition along the peeling paint and cracks brought this detail […]

Fern Fronds
I have been practising with a manually focused macro lens. These fern fronds were one of the studies I tried. Essentially a green monochromatic image originally, it seemed to lend itself to a black and white conversion. Cropped slightly and converted to B&W in Aperture.
