John Knox’s Pulpit

21Feb10

John Knox’s Pulpit is a sandstone outcrop where tradition says that the great Protestant preached during the Reformation in Scotland.  It lies only a few miles from home in the gap between West Lomond and Bishop hills.  Sadly, there is no direct evidence that John Knox himself preached there.  However, it was undoubtedly used for open air services during the Reformation.  The most distinctive rocks forming the ‘pulpit’ have been removed by the local council on safety grounds.  Nevertheless, you still get a sense of the open air preaching that was a distinctive feature of the Scottish Reformation.

This was a GF1 photograph taken directly under the rock face.  The texture of the rock led to a B&W treatment being preferred.  The image was converted to B&W in SilverEfex Pro, with both contrast and structure boosted.  A red filter effect was added.  Finally a slight curves adjustment was made in Aperture.
