Hostas

I have rather belatedly come to appreciate hostas for the strong architectural shape of their leaves.  These were in a small walled garden that had been turned into a plant nursery.  Once I saw the shot it was always obvious that this would be better in black and white as it would emphasise the form of the leaves.

This was a totally Aperture workflow.  The GF1 shot was converted from Raw (the black and white jpeg looked pretty nice too, but the raw file just had much more depth to it) and converted to black and white without round tripping it to any of the other tools.  Apart from the black and white conversion, the exposure was pulled back almost a stop and the black point moved slightly right to punch up the image.  Definition was added and then the contrast was boosted through a larger than normal s-curve.  I then tried a tip that I had seen on line and made a bold white balance conversion to cool the image off significantly.  This added yet more contrast.  Finally, I cropped out about 25% to to tighten up the composition.
