Snow Drops

18Feb10

I like snow drops.  They are the first sign that spring is coming: A GX200 picture with a straight RPP/Aperture conversion.

Back from the tropical heat of Brunei, it is surprisingly chilly.  Snow is on the way.  Well, it is winter … A GX200 picture – typical of the superb macro capabilities of this camera.  It has been wholly developed in RPP, which tends towards more naturalistic, less saturated colours.

I had a very quick tour of the Water Village in Bandar Seri Bagawan before leaving brunei – actually the kind of tour that I hate, since it was conducted at a rush with little time to think about what you are seeing.  Little time to take photos as well.  The result was a very […]

Mosque and Man

15Feb10

High rise buildings in modern cities have obscured the central place that churches used to have in the physical landscape of towns and cities.  This is not yet the case in Bandar Seri Bagwan, where the pristine mosque towers over the less salubrious homes of the Water Village. GF-1 (1st) and GX200 (2nd) pictures.  White […]

Urban Life

14Feb10

The houses on stilts in fishing villages are also found in the capital of Brunei, Bandar Seri Bagwan.  People here own boats instead of cars: Converted from Raw in RPP, recovery of highlights (the sky) and shadows (under the pilings) in Aperture.

Fishing Village

13Feb10

Apparently when the Europeans discovered Brunei it consisted of a few settlements clustered in villages along the banks of the rivers coming from the interior.  The interior was inhabited by scattered Iban tribesmen in longhouses.  Many of them h.ave now been encouraged to move into the towns by generous subsidies, but you still find traditional […]

Brunei Sunset

12Feb10

Not one picture this time, but a small series taken as the setting sun went down over the Belait river: A mixture of GF-1 and GX200 shots.  There was some recovery of detail and colour around the sun – otherwise not much was done in terms of processing.

Roof and Sky

11Feb10

The mosque roof is Kuala Belait is an unusual scalloped shape and its yellow colour contrasts against the (almost constant) blue of the tropical sky: However, the shapes also work in black and white as well: Both images were given a very simple conversion from Raw in RPP from the same original.  The overexposed highlights […]

I find that it is worthing looking down as much as up when walking, as you never know what you will see.  With the masses of deadfall on the Brunei coast these bits of palm had been washed up just like a bat and ball.  The little holes are made by small crabs that scuttle […]

Beachcombing 1

09Feb10

The beach at Kuala Belait is a long strand on which the sea breaks.  Palms and other trees front the sand and it looks almost idyllically tropical – until you come across the sandflies.  The rivers running from the interior of the country bring down masses of deadfall and other vegetation.  Most of it is […]
