Bonnet Stane (Stone)

03Jan10

The Bonnet Stane (or Stone – opinions vary on the spelling) is a strange sandstone outcrop on the northern slopes of West Lomond hill, a short walk from home.  Nowadays a local shepherd uses a cave with hurdles as a makeshift sheep fold.  However, this cave is known as Maiden’s Bower.  According to legend, a girl fell in love with a young man.  In best Hamlet tradition he belonged to a rival family.  The stone was their meeting spot.  One day, as she approached the stone, she saw her father’s men ambush and kill her lover.  She refused to return home and spent the remainder of her life in the cave.

From experience, she must have spent the rest of her life in very damp conditions.  No wonder she was revered as a saint.

I love it. These interesting formations are enough in themselves, but you have captured it in a way that really makes it special. The texture of the snow at the foot and the patterns in the sky above. Composition is spot on! Excellent work.
